The Orlando Sentinel is having a hard time accepting reality. They are just now beginning to realize that they have been riding a dead horse.

Even though I prescribe to the need for an HLV is a myth, any version of Ares V lite that uses 8.4 meter core is a vindication for Direct and even more if 4 segment solids are used.
There's nothing wrong with Direct, except the pitchmen for it. I doubt that the latest version of it will be picked.

For once Me2, we see in the same direction. One of my theories has been (for several months now) that Ares V would morph down to something very similar to the Direct concept with Ares I being turned into a flying testbed for Ares V lite for a few flights and then being phased out- thus fully covering the sunk costs politically because it will not be outright cancelled.
What's going to go down the toilet for HSF, IMO, will be your deity the EELV. As soon as SpaceX blows up the first (and perhaps the first few) Falcon 9s, - that is... if they can ever get the software to flight status in the first place... the whole EELV industry will be tarred in the Congress as far as HSF goes. Of course you'll always have those highly exciting satellites to send up... so that'll be good
Ares I will be canceled outright. it would be a waste as a testbed. It would still be cheaper that continuing, the sunk costs are a drop in the bucket compared to want is needed to finish
Falcon 9 is not an EELV
Since Ares I is not flying Orion in yours and my vision, what is taking US astronauts to the ISS? Not Ares I. It will be commercial launch vehicles.
In the Congressional hearings, the MOST concern was not about anything that you Ares I phobics have been bantering about- the prime concern among the law makers (who, unlike Me2) will actually have control over things, was "sunk costs." It came up dozens of times- yet the Ares I phobics continue to simply brush it off. The Ares I phobics should spend less time on the blackberrys and more time studying Congressional transcripts.
You're wrong.

Where is the thread that McDade bashes Direct? I think is was titled "who is Stephan Metchan?"
That post has been gone for sometime now.

Why? It was McDade's utter conviction in Direct's failings which led me to this site. I thought I had stumbled upon a group of people who could explain to me why all of its apparently common sense proposals were impractical. After all, it really did seem too good to be true.
Thanks to McDade (and others) I progressively moved from on-the-fence to a cautious Direct supporter. And I tired of McDade's obnoxious rants so much that he has now been on my ignore list for several months.
Steroids wouldn't have saved Apollo from cancellation...
Who are the others John? Atfer all, I have been accused of aligning this website to be pro-Ares and anti-everything else.
Am I and this site part of the "Others"?

But, wait! They are still workin' on it....
Here's DIRECT 4.0:
It looks a little like You-Know-Who.
“The sky is NOT the limit!”- Jim McDade

DIRECT is not the only so-called alternative that was half-baked. The exaggerated claims of Ares bashers are finally coming to light. That does not mean that Ares I will be saved, but it is a shame that supposedly serious decision makers were so willing to jump on such poorly substantiated claims and numbers. That wave of anti-Ares momentum was based on bad math and unrealistic or exaggerated projections.

Wrong again.
The exaggerated claims of McDade can't change the fact *that Ares is gone because it was technically and fiscally a bad design*. Plain and simple. No amount of lipstick is going to fix that pig.
The real problems of Ares I have yet to come to light.
* it is a fact.
